The Kata Lab
The Kata Lab is a monthly workshop dedicated to the deep study of kata and bunkai for brown and black belt students, led by Sensei Adam Sutherland, 4th Dan.
Each month, a single kata is selected and explored in detail — not for competition preparation, but for understanding. Sessions focus on structure, transitions, intent, timing, and practical partner applications, allowing participants to investigate how and why the kata works.
This is a space for curiosity, discussion, and refinement. We move slowly, ask questions, and explore variations without pressure to “perform” or rush for results.
The Kata Lab is ideal for karateka who enjoy kata as a lifelong study and want to reconnect with its purpose, principles, and practicality.
Open to all JKS members
